THE SPORTING LIFE – INDIAN OCEAN & BEYOND!
THE SPORTING LIFE
Throughout the Luxury Holidays Direct Indian Ocean & Beyond collection the sports-minded will find a wealth of choices – and in many destinations it can offer you an array of free activities both on land and in or on water.
A World of Water Sports:
Mauritius: Mauritius is surrounded by a coral reef with a rich marine life – and offers shallow comfortable dive sites for beginners, as well as walls, rock formations, caverns and wrecks for the experienced. Some of the best diving is where the island reef breaks – especially between Souillac and Le Bouchon (south coast) and at Flic en Flac (west coast).
Seychelles: The Seychelles have a number of dive centres and the sport is very popular, especially from the outlying islands. There are four marine national parks, and more than 150 species of tropical reef fish have been identified. Dolphin and porpoise are common between the islands.
Maldives: The Maldives offer both experienced and novice divers superb underwater conditions for drift diving, wreck diving, night diving and more. Seventy species of coral attract a rich marine life, with large pelagics mixing easily with a rainbow array of tropical fish. Most dive sites are in the shallower reefs. Many inter-island channels also offer excellent sport. Water makes up over 99% of the Maldives’ total area – so it’s no surprise that these islands boast some of the world’s best fishing grounds. Some resorts offer fishing trips on modern speedboats equipped for big-game fishing. Fishing trips can often end with a barbecue at which the day’s catch is cooked and eaten! Night fishing is also popular. Harpoon guns are prohibited.
Dubai: Dubai’s protected Gulf waters mean that May to October is so warm that no wetsuits are needed. 3mm suits are comfortable for the rest of the year. Many submerged wrecks attract startling arrays of vivid tropical fish. Dive sites are all wreck diving. Depths range from 10 to 80 metres and the wrecks have formed artificial reefs with a rich collection of marine life.
South Africa: The Mozambique Current flowing down South Africa’s Indian Ocean coast brings warm tropical water. At Sodwana Bay are the world’s most southerly coral reefs, home to many colourful fish and some great nudibranches. Whale sharks, turtles, dolphins and ragged-tooth sharks are often seen in specific places. Further along the coast the underwater fauna and flora change gradually until, nearer Cape Town, diving is in chilly, but beautiful, kelp forests.
A World of Golf:
Are you a serious golfer or someone who simply enjoys a leisurely game amid superb scenery and in ideal conditions? There’s a host of venues and Luxury Holidays Direct bonuses to choose from. The many examples include:
Mauritius: There’s excellent golf to be enjoyed on at least 12 delightful courses adjoining some of the leading hotels – the most acclaimed of which are Le Touessrok on Ile aux Cerfs and the Belle Mare Plage Golf Club.
Seychelles: Constance Lemuria Resort on Praslin offers a stunning 18-hole championship course framed by 150 hectares of palm groves. This spectacular course borders the enchanting beaches of both the Small Kerlan Cove and the Grand Kerlan Cove. Palm trees, allowing the light to intermittently filter through, fringe the first 12 holes. From the 13th hole, the course extends over the steep slopes of a thickly forested hill, with breathtaking vistas.
Dubai: Dubai’s major courses cater for all handicaps and foibles! They include the magnificent Al Badia 18-hole championship course beside Dubai Creek; the Desert Course at Arabian Ranches; The Dubai Creek & Yacht Club, a national monument and visitors’ favourite; the Emirates Golf Club’s flagship Majlis par 72-course; the Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa, with a 9-hole resort course; the Nad Al Sheba Club, boasting the Middle East’s only fully-floodlit 18-hole championship course; and the spectacular Montgomerie, one of the Middle East’s most luxurious and desirable golfing destinations.
South Africa: In South Africa golfers are blessed for choice – with an ideal climate for spending time out on the fairways under a bright African sun. If you enjoy the challenge of a coastal course, there’s a huge range available. If you prefer playing at altitude, then the selection is just as good. Most famous is Sun City’s Gary Player Country Club – but there are many other world-class courses that have featured on both the European PGA Tour and the local Sunshine Tour.
Tennis & other Land Sports:
Tennis is available at most featured hotels in the Indian Ocean islands (limited to a few hotels in Maldives) as well as in Sri Lanka, Goa, Dubai, Oman and some hotels in South Africa. In some locations coaching can be provided for a charge. Sports such as volleyball, football or badminton are offered on a more informal basis at many beach hotels in the same destinations.
